Living Locally Reconsidering Critical Regionalism

2015.10.09 - 2016.01.12

【Past Exhibition】

Contemporary Japan is at a turning point, as many people begin giving importance to values quite different to those of material/economic abundance and reconsidering the meaning of local communities. Coexistence with the environment,”degrowth economics,” the progressive aging of society, and changing ideas about family, all widely seen as pressing challenges, seem to be having a substantial impact on the lifestyle of individuals. In his 1983 essay “Towards a Critical Regionalism,” the architect and critic Kenneth Frampton proposed that spatial design reflect the history/culture/natural environment of a locality. Some 30 years later, we once again find ourselves reflecting deeply on social change, and through architectural design and art rethinking those connections to our localities that we feel in our everyday lives.
